  • 1 (12-14 ounce) loaf French bread, sourdough bread, or challah, sliced
  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 2 tablespoons confectioners’ sugar
  • 8 large eggs
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 2/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • Topping: 1/2 cup all-purpose flour, 1/2 cup packed brown sugar, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, 1/4 teaspoon salt, 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed

Instructions

  • – Cut or tear bread into cubes and spread half in a greased 9×13 inch baking dish.
  • – In a bowl, beat together the cream cheese and confectioners’ sugar; drop spoonfuls over the bread. Top with the remaining bread cubes.
  • – In another bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, cream, granulated sugar, and vanilla. Pour evenly over the bread. – Press the bread down gently to absorb the mixture. Cover and chill overnight in the refrigerator.
  • – Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Remove the casserole from the refrigerator and let it sit at room temperature for 20-30 minutes.
  • – For the topping, mix flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt together. Cut in the butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Sprinkle over the casserole.
  • – Bake for 45-55 minutes, or until golden and set. Serve warm with your favorite syrup or toppings.
